Dear friend,

When I first envisioned the future Workforce Innovation Skills Hub, the main focus was to ensure that the program would benefit residents and put them on a path toward well-paying jobs. While the W.I.S.H. work site at the new Lee District Community Center is undergoing final preparations, the program's first cohort is already completing their training. Last week, I visited the co-operator of the W.I.S.H., Building Momentum, at their headquarters to greet the program's first cohort.

Members of the cohort were hard at work, putting what they learned from training to complete their first project for Flags of Valor. Flags of Valor is a veteran-owned, veteran-operated, and veteran-made company that is the largest producer of wooden American flags in the United States. To help support the mission of Flags of Valor, cohort members received training on how to properly measure and cut wood, including how to operate a state-of-the-art laser cutter. In addition to the Flags of Valor project, two W.I.S.H. participants received training on assembling sensors used in countless machines and other devices.

Cohort members shared their gratitude and excitement about being part of this program. Members felt they are receiving the individual attention they need while also engaging in an environment that promotes teamwork. All participants reported that the program is setting them up for future professional success.

I look forward to providing you with further updates in the next few months.

Supervisor Lusk in the Community

Congratulations to all Fairfax County high school graduates! I know that the entire class of '22 will make us proud in their future endeavors.

I had the honor of attending all of the high school graduations in the Lee District, including Thomas A. Edison High School, John R. Lewis High School, and Hayfield Secondary School. In addition, I attended the West Potomac High School graduation in Mt. Vernon, where 40% of the student population resides in the Lee District.

Workforce, Innovation and Skills Hub Presentation

During the latest Board of Supervisors Economic Initiatives Commitee, I gave an update on the Workforce Innovation Skills Hub to committee members.

In my presentation, I explain the goals, services, and status of the W.I.S.H.

Look for this Fairfax County mailer in your mailbox. It will tell you your state house district, state senate district, congressional district and polling place. These may have changed as a result of redistricting.

Hoarding Disorder

Hoarding is the extreme and persistent collection of possessions or trash inside a dwelling (newspapers,, trash, unopened sale items, clothing, paper, rotting food and even animals), which creates a dangerous living situation and may impact health, wellness, or quality of life for occupants.

Did you know that hoarded structures can create fire hazards and create other dangerous living environments for the residents and animals who live in them?

Ticks are a concern almost all year because they can transmit infections that can cause people to become sick. Lyme disease is still the best known and most common disease spread by ticks in Virginia, but there are others such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and ehrlichiosis.

Factors like weather, habitat, and the availability of host animals can affect the tick population from year to year and make it hard to predict their numbers.

Heat Safety Tips

During extremely hot days, there is plenty that you can do to stay cool, like go to a movie, stroll through a shopping center or visit one of our public buildings when they are open:

• Libraries

• Community Centers

• Rec Centers

• Fairfax County Government Center

Remember, young children and infants are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness and death and it is NEVER safe to leave a child, disabled person or a pet locked in a car.
